Room Parent General Information
Thank you for volunteering to be a room parent for your child’s class. Being a room parent is a rewarding and fun way to help out in the classroom while making lasting memories.
Room parent duties vary with each of the classrooms. Some teachers tie festivities and parties with curriculum and just need their room parent(s) to help gather supplies and help out at the event. Other teachers don’t want to plan the festivities and prefer to have the room parent(s) plan and organize the entire event. Most of the teachers hold some sort of fall fest at the end of October, a winter party in December, Valentines party in February and an end of the year treat in May. In addition to the class parties other duties include the class auction basket for a spring fundraiser, and helping coordinate Teacher Appreciation Week in May.
The district prohibits home baked goods, so please make sure that all food items are purchased from a store and arrive in original containers. It has also been requested that drinks be non-staining. PLEASE TALK TO YOUR CLASS TEACHER BEFORE PURCHASING ANY KIND OF FOOD OR BEVERAGE. WE HAVE STUDENTS IN OUR SCHOOL WITH SEVERE FOOD ALLERGIES.
Please arrange for a conference with your teacher and any other room parents for your classroom regarding your room parent responsibilities as soon as possible. This is also a great time to discuss how to go about collecting classroom money. It is highly recommended that you collect between $10 and $20 from each parent in your classroom at the beginning of the school year. It is easier to collect one time; however some teachers would prefer to collect for individual events. It is your responsibility to collect, budget and keep track of your spending. This may be done through some sort of spread sheet or other accounting measure. Keep all receipts. Keep in mind that some parents cannot afford a monetary contribution but could probably provide items when needed. When asking for helpers, try to include everyone, and not rely on the same parents each time.
Many classrooms this year have multiple room parents. (Please see the room parent list that was emailed to you.) This is a great way to help in your child’s classroom while sharing the room parent responsibilities. Communication with your child’s teacher and amongst multiple room parents is key to a successful year.
Other responsibilities of the room parents include teacher appreciation week, the spring fundraiser basket and optionally, some kind of gesture for your teacher’s birthday.
Please keep parents informed about classroom events and parties. A great way to do this is through Friday folders. DO NOT SEND ANYTHING HOME WITHOUT TEACHER APPROVAL! The one exception to this is teacher appreciation.
Room parents are invited and encouraged to attend PTO meetings. These are held on the first Monday of each month at 6pm in the library. Attending meetings is a GREAT way to keep communication open between school and home.
